Overview
Cooling towers play a crucial role in industrial and HVAC systems by dissipating excess heat and ensuring efficient cooling.
To simplify the design and performance analysis of forced-draft cooling towers, I have developed a simple Excel Spreadsheet.
This Excel file allows users to perform an approximate process sizing and performance evaluation of a forced-draft cooling tower. The tool facilitates quick assessments by requiring few input parameters and automatically computing key operational values.
How It Works
The spreadsheet features a user-friendly interface where input cells are highlighted with a light blue background. Users need to enter the following parameters to perform the calculations:
- Water flow rate to be cooled
- Water inlet and outlet temperatures
- Inlet air temperature
- Wet bulb temperature
- Expected hot air outlet temperature (default assumption: hot water inlet temperature – 2°C)
- Concentration cycles and chloride concentration in make-up water, which impact the circulating water quality and the make-up and blowdown flow rates
- Tower pressure drop and fan efficiency
- Drift losses, if applicable
Calculation and Convergence
Once the parameters are set, clicking the “CALCULATE” button initiates the computational process. The spreadsheet iterates until it reaches convergence, ensuring accurate results. A successful calculation is confirmed when the convergence cell displays “OK”.
